It has been confirmed by Monster High creator Garrett Sander that Valentine was originally supposed to come out by his diary. He was ashamed of being gay so he tried to go after a version of fake love.

Valentine was supposed to come out in his diary as a gay monster but it didn't happen because the circumstances behind his coming out was putting "lgbt people in a bad light.".
